Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148 Section 26F states, “All buildings or structures occupied in whole or in part for residential purposes shall, upon sale or transfer of such building or structure, be equipped by the seller with approved smoke detectors.”

Fees

There is a $50, per occupancy, inspection fee (checks made to the Town of Oxford). Payment can be made on the day of inspection. The 26F certificate expires within 60 days of the date issued.

Schedule Inspections

Inspections are conducted Monday through Friday between 9:30 am and 4 pm (set time). Call 508-987-6012 or email the Fire Prevention Officer. If emailing, leave the following:

  • Name
  • Phone Number
  • Address of Property Being Sold
  • Closing Date

Prior to inspections, ensure all detectors are properly functioning. Also, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148 Section 59 and Town of Oxford By Law Chapter 32 require all structures to have the street number permanently affixed to the structure. Residential numbering shall be no smaller than 4 inches. If the structure is not visible from the road, a post shall be placed at the end of the driveway with the numbers permanently affixed to three sides of the post. The inspector will not grant a 26 1/2 F Certificate without a number identifying the residence.

Re-inspections are subject to an additional fee.
